The System Builder is designed to assist those wishing to find a longer term betting strategy and is an invaluable tool
for anyone interested in horse racing systems.
It is not aimed at looking at one individual race and pulling out the winner although obviously the knowledge gained
can be put to good use in this respect!
The basic principle behind it is simple, but is easily and often confused. Every time a horse runs,
information pertaining to it is recorded in our database. With the System Builder you can manipulate this information to suit
your needs. Using the simple stages to build your horse racing system you can quickly and effectively answer any questions
and finely tune the data to suit your requirements.
Each time you run a query the System Builder will match the criteria you provide against the
database and supply you with statistics allowing you to analyse past performance and therefore consider how to treat future
runners who have the same criteria. You can check practically anything, but here are three totally random examples.
- Jockeys stats for a trainer at a track the horse has previously won at.
- Favourites record in Handicaps over 5f.
- Odds on shots performance when they previously fell
These are fairly simple statistics but the power of the system builder is its ever-growing
flexibility. You can start your system with any criteria and break it down by any combination of categories allowing
billions of possibilities.
The hope of course is that you will find a system that is consistently profitable and you can therefore back horses
of similar stature in the future with a heightened degree of confidence!
The key to getting the best from the System Builder is to understand its function and to use
common sense. But here are some key points.
- An unset category includes all possibilities. There is no point setting a criteria unless you are narrowing.
(example - setting Number of Runners to between 1 and 40 is a waste of time and will slower your query as the database
will still perform a check).
- For systems you wish to save, if you are checking a particularly complex query or one that contains a lot of qualifiers, narrow the dates.
Asking the builder to evaluate hundreds of thousands of rows is nowhere near as efficient as asking it to query 5,000. Try and think in advance what a
realistic period of testing is! For example if you are querying a jockey then 6 years data may be needed, if you are querying the performance of horses who
won on their last run is it not possible looking back as far as January 2008 would suffice?
- Do not use the fullset/digger functions on combinations that involve backing every horse in any type of race. Example - setting Going as Good To Firm
is great but then breaking down by Distance is crazy. What you are effectively asking is "show me how much id have lost backing ALL horses in ALL races
with Good To Firm going and break it down by distance". As you can see this is pointless.
- Dont run unneccesary searches, which realistically will not tell you anything.
- Avoid systems which are extremely vague. They are time consuming and ultimately a waste of time.
- Ensure your system could not involve backing every horse in a race.
- Be as specific with your criteria as you possibly can be.
- Only use Fullset when you have to, it takes far longer than using Quickset.
- Read and understand the help and examples before you use the System Builder.
- Contact us for assistance if you are at any time struggling.
- Appreciate that past performance is not a guarantee of what the future holds!

The Quickset function is the starting point for your horse racing system building.
The categories available are listed with tickboxes next to each. Select as many categories as you
know the criteria for and then enter and you will be taken to a form where you can enter the appropriate values
by scrolling through each chosen category.
You can use the Quickset function at any stage to add more criteria to your system, the most important thing to note
being you MUST know for definite the details you want to set. This is because the Quickset function ALWAYS offers every value
in the category range. For example if you are using Quickset to set a Race Distance you will always be presented with
the same dropdown values ranging from 5 furlongs to 4 miles 4 furlongs irrespective of what your
existing system criteria is.
This of course means if you set an incorrect value your system will be void. Extending the Race Distance example a little
can be a good example of this. If you had a horse racing system of backing favourites on the All Weather and then decided to
use Quickset and add in a Race Distance of 4m4f, it would let you and therefore your system would be void (as there are no
races of this type ran on the All Weather).
The huge advantage of Quickset is its speed, as the database does not have to match your existing
criteria with the selection options. Therefore using Quickset requires knowledge of what type of query you are building
and what criteria you want to add. If used incorrectly Quickset will lead to void queries.
Comments -
- Any categories that are already set are excluded from Quickset selection.
- Quickset is significantly faster than any other option and should always be used if possible.
- If you definitely wanted to add a particular jockey to your system criteria, use Quickset Jockey.
- If you are sure you want to set tracks Kempton and Leicester, use Quickset Tracks.
- If you are unsure which criteria you want to add, do not use Quickset.
The Fullset function takes you to a breakdown of your existing system criteria by desired category.
Only options with qualifiers matching your criteria are displayed along with performance statistics for your analysis.
This means you can have any set of existing system criteria and show a performance breakdown by the
different types of value within chosen category.
When using the Fullset function it is essential you use common sense and avoid running irrelevant or pointless queries.
If you do the database may not even return values to you as there are millions and millions of records requiring
manipulated, sorted and displayed within a short space of time.
The undisputed advantage of Fullset is the detail. The database lists only valid options and
provides you with knowledge and insight before you decide what to do next. It is extremely useful for quickly displaying
powerful statistics and showing which types of any chosen category are performing best.
It should be avoided when your existing criteria is vague, so setting your start criteria
as UK and then using Fullset Track is a complete waste of time as the database is searching for stats based on backing every
single runner in the UK and breaking them down by track!
Comments -
- Fullset is considerably slower than Quickset and should be avoided if you know what criteria you want to add.
- If you have already set values for a category, you can use Fullset again. This can be very useful in the building process.
Example - you start with criteria of 2 particular Jockeys but after adding several more categories need to
check again if either performs significantly worse.
- If you want to breakdown your existing system specification by trainer, use Fullset Trainer.
- If you want to see which tracks your system performs best at, use Fullset Tracks.
- If you know that you want to narrow the system to a known specific criteria, do not use Fullset.
The unset option removes unwanted criteria from your system. Choose all the categories you want to remove and enter to
be taken to a confirmation screen. After doing so, you will return to the System Builder screen and your specifications
will have been amended.
Comments -
- Use the tickboxes to select all criteria you want removed.
- If you have a category set in your query and decide you want to now include all possibilities, use Unset.

The digger is an extension to the system builder offering powerful research focused on meeting your horse racing system
goals. It works by taking the existing system criteria you have already set and analysing multiple categories of your choice since 1st January 2008
and showing which multi-criteria is proving to be most/least profitable at SP.
Its uses are endless but a simple example to demonstrate its power is if you wanted to research jockey/trainer combinations. With the Fullset function
on the builder you can breakdown by Jockey or Trainer, but the Digger allows you to breakdown on up to 5 criteria at once.
Using the above example lets say we wish to see the best performing jockey/trainer combinations when teaming up on a favourite. Using the Quickset function
add in criteria Favourites, navigate to the Digger and choose Jockey and Trainer, select Profit and hit Go.
What you will receive is the ten most profitable systems since 1st January 2008. All of these have your existing criteria in them as standard, the
jockey/trainer partnership will be listed to the left and a button to view longer term analysis of the system to the right. In between you can see how many points at SP
you would have made had you backed during the Digger analysed period.
Comments -
- Dates were set at 180 days initially as we monitor usage and performance. The coding is particularly complex and
there will be some fine-tuning required as we develop the facility and its enormous potential.
We have now increased dates back to 1st January 2008
- We will be adding far better help pages to demonstrate best use of the Digger in the coming months.
- You will receive an error if you choose anything other than 2, 3, 4 or 5 categories.
- Each digger 'View' button will launch a new window and therefore it is wise to close these as you go and prevent having
hundreds of open windows!

The Run Query function is for finalised systems you do not wish to make any more amendments to. If chosen you will
be taken to a confirmation screen and shown the number of qualifiers. Please be sensible in this regard. Running queries
with tens of thousands of qualifiers is not likely to be worthwhile and will take a long time.
If you do proceed you will be presented with analysis of your system and further options to take things a step further.
The below links will take you to a section explaining each of the analysis types and available options.
Analysis
Qualifiers
Time Line
Each Way
Stake Plan
Use Races
The Analysis Page is the results your system has recorded and some facts and figures regarding the perfomance over time.
The stats provide data on how consistent the system is.
The Qualifiers Page is a list of all the bets that match your specifications. They are broken down into groups of 30. To view the next 30 simply press the buttion at the bottom of the page.
For full details of any qualifier click the appropriate link.
The TimeLine Page is the performance of your system over different periods of time.
Simply decide the time period you want to break your system down over and then press Go.
The Each Way Page provides analysis of your system had you decided to back all selections each way.
When you back each way it cost 1 point to back the win and 1 point to back the place and this is reflected in the results.
You can use the settings to include only horses over a certain price and/or only races with a certain number of runners. Each Way Terms.
- Less than 5 runners. Winner Only - Excluded from Each Way Analysis.
- 5,6 or 7 runners. Quarter Odds - Two Places.
- Handicaps with between 8 and 15 runners. Quarter odds - 3 places.
- Handicaps with 16 or more runners. Quarter odds - 4 places.
- All other races. Fifth odds - 3 places.

The Use Races is an advanced facility allowing you to use the races in your system and then start a new system with only them in it.
An example would be if you had chosen all races with an odds on shot in them as your system. Use Races would mean you could then apply a filter to see how Second Favs got on in these races.
Another example would be if you had chosen favourites for a certain trainer and then Use Races. You could then see how another trainer got on against these.

This term refers to the data you have already added and is being used in any query you may be running. Where there is no
panel displaying the horse racing categories or criteria there will be a button provided if you need to check.
Each of the categories in the System Builder can be saved allowing daily qualifiers to be retrieved on
your homepage in the My Systems area. In this regard, it is vital you are aware which of your categories are static and which are not, you
can clarify this in these help pages by navigating to the category where you can view confirmation of static/non-static
status. To confirm exactly what is meant by these terms, see the descriptions below
Definition -
- Static Categories - All categories marked as static will not change. This means your criteria is locked in and there is
no area for movement. For example Location is a static category and if you have specified UK as part of your criteria
you can be sure only UK races will be included in that system when retrieved (Kempton wont suddenly move to Ireland!).
All categories relating to previous races are static (such as previous placing, previous jockey, second last prize money etc)
- Non-Static Categories - All categories marked as non-static are subject to change - reasons include non-runners,
overweight, odds fluctuation and a change in the going conditions. The information we load on to the site
in advance of a days racing is based on what is known at the time and therefore ultimately it is your responsibility to
ensure you do not miss or incorrectly back any given horse. An example would be Jockey - if you have included
Frankie Dettori as a system criteria all horses he is down to ride the night before will be flagged to you, if he either
misses or gets an additional ride after this point it will not be retrieved.

- Setting between BottomWeight and BottomWeight will return only horses who carried bottom weight in their race.
- Setting between '10lbs higher' and '15lbs higher' will only include horses who are 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 or 15 lbs heavier than the bottom weight in the race.
- This is a Non-Static Category.

With these tests you can check how many runs/rides since the horse, jockey or trainer last won.
The value would be 1 if winning last race.
Comments -
- Setting between 10 and 12 in the Horse Runs Since Win category means only horses whose last win came 10, 11 or 12 runs ago are included in the query.
- Setting between 5 and 5 in the Jockey Rides Since Win category means only jockey whose last winner was ridden on their fifth last ride would be included.
- This is a Static Category.

This test looks at the horses last race and how many of the horses who competed against it had subsequently ran.
It can be used well in conjunction with the Subsequent Strike options.
Comments -
- Setting between 5 and 8 means only horses whose previous race had since produced 5, 6, 7 or 8 subsequent runners are included.
- This is a Non-Static Category because there is a slight chance another horse from the last run could run before
the evaluated horse on the day.
- Only the next run of each competitor from the previous race is evaluated (ie if Horse A had met Horse B who had since ran 5 times only its first run would be included).

This test looks at the horses last race and how many of the horses who competed against it had subsequently won. The same theory applies to the placings category.
Comments -
- Setting between 3 and 3 means only horses whose previous race had since produced exactly 3 subsequent winners are included.
- This is a Non-Static Category because there is a slight chance another horse from the last run could run before
the evaluated horse on the day.
- Only the next run of each competitor from the previous race is evaluated
(ie if Horse A had met Horse B who had since won 5 times only its first win would be included).

Here you can breakdown/include only horses whose previous race has subsequently produced a strike rate based on the criteria you set.
Comments -
- Setting between 10 and 50% on Prev Race Subsequent Strike (win only) means only horses whose competitors on its previous run had since produced
a win strike rate between these values will be included.
- Only the next run of each competitor from the previous race is evaluated (ie if Horse A had met Horse B who had since ran 5 times only its first run would be included).
- This is a Non-Static Category because there is a slight chance another horse from the last run could run before
the evaluated horse on the day.

Here you can breakdown/include only races that had a favourite within your specified price range.
Comments -
- Setting between 2/1 & 4/1 limits your query to only races where the shortest priced horse in the race (fav or joint fav etc) was
equal to or greater than 2/1 and less than or equal to 4/1
- Setting between 10/11 and 10/11 limits your query to only races which had a 10/11 priced favourite
- This is a Non-Static Category

With this category you can limit the races included in your query by specifying a weight range that was carried by the top weighted horse in the race.
For example if you specifed between 10-1 and 10-2 you would be narrowing your system to only horses running in races where the topweight
in the race was carrying that weight. NOTE THIS CATEGORY DOES NOT LIMIT HORSES IT ONLY LIMITS RACES. Hope that got your attention!
I mention this because people think this limits the runners in a race, when in fact it only limits a characteristic of a race. In other words if you
set your criteria as only the above example - you would be backing every horse in every race where the topweighted horse carried between 10-1 and 10-2.
Comments -
- Setting between 10-0 & 10-0 limits your query to only races where the the top weighted horse in the race (after all deductions are made)
carried this weight
- Setting between 11-2 and 11-4 limits your query to only races which had a topweight carrying 11-2, 11-3 or 11-4
- This is a Non-Static Category

This category allows you to specify/test the number of times the horse had ran in the 365 days immediately prior to the
race in question. For example the test period for a horse who ran on 1st January 2003 is 1st January 2002 to 31st December 2002.
Comments -
- To only include horses who had ran 5 times or more within the last 365 days, set Horse Runs (365 days) as between 5 and 100.
- To only include horses who had not ran in the last 365 days, set Horse Runs (365 days) as between 0 and 0.
- All runs are taken into account irrespective of race type, conditions etc
- This is a Static Category

This category allows you to specify/test the number of times the horse had ran in the 90 days immediately prior to the
race in question. For example the test period for a horse who ran on 1st May 2008 is the 90 days immediately prior finishing with 30th April 2008.
Comments -
- To only include horses who had ran once or twice within the last 90 days, set Horse Runs (90 days) as between 1 and 2.
- To only include horses who had not ran in the last 90 days, set Horse Runs (90 days) as between 0 and 0.
- All runs are taken into account irrespective of race type, conditions etc

These categories allow breakdown by the most visited location of each trainer, in other words where the trainer sends their horses most.
Comments -
- To only include trainers whose primary location is Scotland set Scotland as your criteria.
- To only include trainers whose primary location is in Ireland set the 4 Irish provinces as your criteria
- The Trainer Primary Location % category shows what percentage of the trainers horses were sent to the primary location
- To only include trainers who had 50% or more runners in their primary location set between 50% and 100%
- This is a Static Category

With this category you can limit your query to horses who were a certain position in the market. This is worked out by taking the
shortest priced horse and setting as 1 and so forth. If in a 4 horse race there were 3 horses at Even money, the final horse would be 4th
position in the market.
Comments -
- To only include horses in the top 3 in the market set between 1 and 3.
- To only include horses who were 8th in the market set between 8 and 8.
- This is a Non-Static Category

With these setting you can identify and test stats based on how many rides on the day altogether or at the track that day, the jockey had.
Comments -
- Setting between 3 and 4 in Jockeys Day Rides (Track) will return only horses whose jockey had 3 or 4 rides that day at the track.
- Setting between 1 and 1 in Jockey Day Rides will return only horses whose jockey had only that one ride all day.
- This is a Non-Static Category.

With these setting you can identify and test stats based on how many runners the trainer had on the day altogether at the track or in the race itself.
Comments -
- Setting between 2 and 3 in Trainer Day Runs means the the trainer had between 2 and 3 runners in the UK/Ireland all day.
- Setting between 1 and 1 in Trainer Runs on Day (Track) will return only horses whose trainer had only that one runner at the track on the day.
- Setting between 3 and 3 in Trainer Runs on Day (Race) will return only horses whose trainer had 3 runners in the race including the analysed horse.
- This is a Non-Static Category.

With the Top Rating Comparison, you can compare the horse's official rating against the top rated horse in the race.
Comments -
- Setting between TopRated and TopRated will return only horses who had the highest official rating in the race.
- Setting between '10 lower' and '15 lower' will only include horses who are rated 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 or 15 lower than the highest rated in the race.
- This is a Non-Static Category.

With the Average Rating Comparison, you can compare the horse's offical rating against the average rating of the race.
This is calculated by the following basic formula (Add all official ratings in race and divide by Number of Runners)
Comments -
- Setting between AverageRated and AverageRated will return only horses who carried exact average rating in their race.
- Setting between '10 lower' and '15 lower' will only include horses who are rated 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 or 15 lower than the average rating in the race.
- This is a Static Category.

With the Bottom Rating Comparison, you can compare the horse's rating against the bottom rated in the race.
Comments -
- Setting between BottomRated and BottomRated will return only horses who had the lowest official rating in their race.
- Setting between '10 higher' and '15 higher' will only include horses who are rated 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 or 15 higher than the bottom rated in the race.
- This is a Non-Static Category.

With these options you can limit your query to horses who have form of a certain type matching your specifications.
The numeric format of the runs, wins and place options means you can limit to horses with a particular number of runs, wins
or places. Alternatively you could set a broad range to allow any value within that range. The win strike rate options are calculated
using the following rounded formula (Wins*100)/Runs. The place strike rate options are calculated using the following
rounded formula ((Wins+Places)*100)/Runs.
These categories can work very well when used in conjunction with other similar types. For example a horse who has had
25% win strike rate could mean 1 win in 4, 2 in 8, 3 in 12 etc. To eliminate any horses who were relatively inexperienced
in the category you are manipulating it may be appropriate to set runs at between 10 and 100. Another example may be
if you used a Places category on its own it could be misleading (perhaps a horse has previous placed form over distance but it
has had 30 other runs over distance with no joy), using the Runs or Strike Rate options may assist you here.
Comments -
- Horse (Any) indicates form in all previous races regardless of race type or conditions.
- Horse (Class) indicates form in all previous UK races of same class or higher as the days race (for example in a
class 3 race, any previous runs in Class 1,2 or 3 would be taken into account).
In this test Irish races are always treated the same as they do not have a class structure in place. This means
if you are including Irish form and are using this category the test is based on all previous wins in Ireland.
- Horse (Distance) indicates form in previous races over same distance as that days.
- Horse (Going) indicates form in previous races over same going conditions as that days.
- Horse (Jockey) indicates form in previous races when the jockey riding that day was on board.
- Horse (Trainer) indicates form in previous races when sent out by that days trainer.
- Horse (Track Distance) indicates form in previous races ran over the same distance and track as that days.
It is important to note only form in the same category is taken into account for the track
(Therefore if it was an AW race at Lingfield and horse previously won on Turf there it wouldnt count).
- Horse (Course Direction) indicates form in previous races ran over a course of the same direction as that days.
- Horse/Jockey/Trainer (Odds) indicates form in previous races where starting price was within 5 points of that days.
The range included will vary depending on the starting price with a point being judged as movement in the scale of
possible odds (created by including all staring prices in the database since 1997..
An example of this would be for a SP of 10/1 any previous runs when SP was 7/1, 15/2, 8/1, 17/2, 9/1,
10/1, 11/1, 12/1, 14/1, 15/1, 16/1 would be included in the test.
- Horse (Handicap+non) indicates previous form in the same race type as today (type being handicap or non-handicap).
It is important to note the test is strictly defined to handicap or non-handicap depending on that days race type.
For example a horse running in a handicap hurdle with a strike rate of 100% in this test could be based on
a previous run in a flat Handicap.
- Horse (NH Race types) indicates previous form in National Hunt race types (hurdle, chase, nh flat or none of these)
of the same category as todays. For example if you set Placings as between 3 and 5 your query would be limited to
horses who had placed 3, 4 or 5 times in the same type as the run being judged.
- Horse/Jockey/Trainer (Track) indicates previous form at the track in same race category.
It is important to note only form in the same category is taken into account for the track
(Therefore if it was a flat race at Sandown and horse previously won over jumps there it wouldnt count).
- Jockey/Trainer (2 Yr) (14 Day) indicates form of the jockey or trainer in the specified period.
The test always relates to the period of time immediately prior to the run being judged.
- This is a Static Category.
