Ratings Basics
By awarding points to several different tests you can create a process to automatically formulate a score (rating) for anything. To explain how the HorseRaceBase Ratings Machine works, lets take a theoretical situation and use a very simple scoring process. Please bear in mind this is a silly example used only to try and demonstrate the very basics of how ratings work.
Simple Rating Example
You have a database of your music collection and want to use ratings to find your favourite performer. You decide to award points based on 2 categories.
1 - Award 25 points for each of their recordings you own
2 - Award 2 points for each time you have played the CD
Scanning through each of the artists and awarding points as appropriate would create something along these lines.
Artist
Number Owned
Times Played
Rating
Coldplay
7
143
(7*25)+(143*2)=461
U2
9
41
(9*25)+(41*2)=307
The Beatles
17
19
(17*25)+(19*2)=463
Therefore using this rating process the user has been told his favourite artist is The Beatles.
Even by using this very simple illustration, you will already be asking questions!
Who wins if you award 3 points per time listened?
Does the 25 points per recording not make the rating process unfair?
Are you sure you have recorded every time you have played each artist?
It is likely you could pull apart these ratings very easily and quite rightly so! They took me 1 second to think of and there is no real thought behind them!
But if you can grasp the very basics then you can move on - no matter how complicated, no matter how many tests, no matter what type of calculations or algorithms you may use - any set of ratings always apply the same logic. So although the above example bears no resemblance whatsoever to the Ratings Machine it does share the basics with each having.
Calculation Settings
In the above its the 2 categories Number Owned and Times Played.
In the Ratings Machine its the settings you create awarding points for different horse racing tests!
A Data Set
In the simple example its Coldplay, U2 etc.
In the Ratings Machine its horse racing results and data since 1997.
A Formula
In our silly example its (NO*25)+(TP*2)
In the Ratings Machine its a complex step by step formula set up by HorseRaceBase programmers.
Ratings Output
In our silly example its The Beatles two point win over Coldplay
In the Ratings Machine its the Horse Racing Ratings produced as you decide.
So to summarise, ratings can be extremely awkward to understand and very difficult to make sense of, but by recognising the basics you should be able to master them. With the HorseRaceBase Ratings Machine all you need to supply are your Settings to Calculate as the Data Set, Formula and Ratings Output are powered by HorseRaceBase.
