Previous Race Form

On a very simple level, previous race form is the outcome of the horse in its previous runs. Here are a quick few snippets in that regard.

  • A formline such as 444 would mean it had finished fourth in its last three races.
  • It would seem logical but not always the case that the most recent of the runs would be most relevant, it could be those in most similar races
  • Comparisons between the upcoming run and previous runs can be enlightening. Jockey, trainer, going, track, distance etc etc
  • How the competitors in the previous race have fared since can perhaps indicate if the run is better/worse than it looks on paper

You can of course take the bare form and say horse X won last time out, has placed on the same ground or whatever else and there are loads of area of exploration by going down those routes, but it is the last point that the three tools Hot/Cold Races, Form Follow and Hot Races Extra are designed to explore.

Form Follow

This tool is accessed from any race result by clicking the FormFollow button in the Options box. I created help for Form Follow a long time ago, so will not repeat myself but for the purposes of this article what it shows is each horse and where it finished and information relating to its subsequent runs since. The purpose of checking this could be many but as a couple of examples.

  • How did last years Champion Bumper work out? Did the horses who competed in it go on to do anything since?
  • What official ratings were allocated in the next couple of races

There are so many examples of why you would wish to look into how the subsequent form of a race worked out.

Hot/Cold Races

There is again a previously created help area for Hot Races and the purpose of this article is not to go into the actual operation of the tool, more to discuss the point of its existence. Continuing on from the Form Follow tool came suggestions from users to create something that could look in bulk at previous races and perhaps identify if they could be labelled as Hot (have produced a number of winners/placed since) or Cold (have produced a stream of losers since). As we all know there is no categoric black and white when it comes to these things and my honest assessment with all the tools on the site and all stats etc is that you must view each individual upcoming race as its own unique contest. So, it really is not as simple as saying that Race Z has produced 5 winners since and is therefore Hot and Race Y has produced 9 losers from 9 runs since and is therefore Cold. But in a lot of ways it is like a jigsaw puzzle and the purpose of the tool is to draw attention to possible areas of interest.

Hot Races Extra

Really, I could have called this tool Hot/Cold Races Extra but it seemed long winded! Again, this is like so much on the site, an extension of the previous tool. Its point is to look at a previous piece of form and a specific horse within that race with an upcoming run and to at a glance see how the horses it competed against have done since but with far more detail. Did they go on to win in a higher class? Where did the horse finish in relation to the runners who have ran since? The stats therefore relate to the competitors of the last race of the horse who have raced since NOT to the horse itself (who has not ran since but is due to do so). At the point of writing this tool remains in a development stage but in time I will add in options to pull out and sort the data dependent on user requests and again purely using a couple of examples you may use it to -

  • Show horses whose last run has produced a winner in a higher grade on its next run
  • Is a horse with a first placing flattered by an incredibly weak field who have all since done nothing?

Thanks so much for supporting HorseRaceBase and helping with your support, feedback and suggestions to continue to expand the range of tools. Chris
